    SURROUNDINGS
Britannia Bayis part of South Africa’s beautiful West Coast and is blessed with the perfect setting of white rocks and a brilliant cobalt sea. Britannia Bay, consisting of ‘Old Britannia Bay’, Flagship, Golden Mile (Boulevard) and Shelley Point, form the center of the St. Helena Bay area. It is situated on a stunning peninsula, rightfully earning it the name ‘The Jewel of the West Coast’, which is due to its unsurpassed beauty.

Vasco da Gama discovered St Helena Bay in November 1497 and named it Bahai da Santa Elena. A memorial was erected in 1969 to mark this special occasion. Da Gama was on his pioneer voyage to the East when he weighed anchor in this bay and remained here for a week. This monument is certainly a special place to visit, though small and quaint, it holds great meaning for South African history.

Visitors can enjoy long sandy beaches, pristine coastlines, natural beauty and a laid-back lifestyle. The West Coast is famous for its glorious wild flowers, which appear in great abundance during spring. People come here to relax in the peace and quiet of a tranquil country village and experience its bustling fishing harbour. Along the shores you can catch crayfish, snoek, yellowtail, stumpnose and galjoen. This beautiful area is also home to a variety of whale and dolphin species.

There is also the Berg River estuary in the north, as well as the West Coast National Park and Cape Columbine Nature Reserve in the south, all of which are abundant with spectacular bird life, making this a veritable birdwatchers paradise. Just 90 miles north of Britannia Bay is a huge Cape Gannet colony at Lambert’s Bay, where you can take advantage of a state of the art bird hide – its one-way windows allow viewers to get within 10cm of the birds!

Day visits can easily be done to the Cederberg in the east, Elands bay and Lamberts bay in the north, Paternoster, Jacobsbay, Langebaan and Saldanha Bay in the south.

The West Coast National Park offers hiking trails, recreational zones, and plenty of open terrain to explore. Visitors can also enjoy the West Coast National Fossil Park, where you can find one of the world’s richest paleontological dig-sites.

The Shelly Point Golf Estate is just a few minutes drive up the road and offers a pristine golf course, spa and restaurant.

Make Absolute Beach your base from where you can fully explore, discover and enjoy the marvels of the West Coast.
